October 17th, 2011

Eye laser surgery, is a surgery that is done to remove any kind of disabilities that an eye may have. After undergoing this surgery, people often have to let go of their spectacles or contact lenses. It helps in improving vision. However, this surgery involves a lot of risk as well. If it does not end successfully, a person can suffer from many problems that can result in his vision getting worse. Therefore, one must be familiar with the risks involved in eye laser surgery before deciding on getting it done.

The basic purpose of this surgery is to reshape the cornea so that the eye can focus properly. Three different types of eye laser surgeries are practiced, of which LASIK is the latest. Whether you need to get it done or not depends on the recommendation of your doctor.

LASIK is considered to be a very successful technique that is quick and involves less pain. The results of this surgery keep the patient satisfied and happy. In this procedure, both of the eyes are operated at the same time. A person returns back to normal life shortly after the surgery is done, usually after 2 to 7 days. In the process, a small flap is cut in the cornea beneath which the laser is applied. After finishing the laser treatment process, the flap of the cornea is positioned back to where it originally was. The whole process is 10 minutes long.

There are however, a few problems that the patients might have to face after this eye laser surgery. Firstly, there is a high chance that the patient may experience dryness. For such a problem, artificial tear drops can be used. Secondly, there is a risk of keractectasia i.e. excessive thinning of the eye wall can cause the shape of the eye to become uneven and the focusing power to be unstable. The eye is thoroughly checked before the surgery for any kind of abnormalities to prevent this from happening. Next, there is also a risk of a complete loss in vision. Although it is a very rare case but it is also the scariest. There is also a risk of a revision surgery that is the ICL surgery.

Therefore, eye laser surgery can help creating convenience for those who are bothered by wearing spectacles or contact lenses. It can sweep off any kind of problems with the eye but it also has its risks.
