Try the Bates Method for Improving Your Vision

January 7th, 2012

william bates eyesightDo you have poor vision and either can’t afford the insurance to obtain glasses or prefer not to spend money on them at all, you may very well benefit from a Bates eye exercise. This type of exercise is specifically for fixing poor vision problems in individuals without needing to spend all your money on eye care visits. There are actually several Bates exercises that you can do to correct your poor vision, and although these exercises were invented in the early 1900s, they are still just as effective today.

One of the exercises that Bates came up with was called color focusing. It’s easy to do and can be done throughout your day without it being an interruption to your regular tasks. When you wake up in the morning, choose a color that you’d like to focus on for the day. Afterwards, as you move along in your day try to point out or recognize objects of that color. Don’t worry about the shape of the object or even what it is. The object of the game is that you put your attention solely on the color. Do this every day, but with different colors.

This has been known to improve your vision significantly. Another common way to relax your eyes is through sunning and palming. While both of these exercises can be done alone, they provide better results when you do them together. First, you need to do sunning. This is where you sit in front of a table lamp with the light facing your face and your eyes closed. You’d turn your head from side to side as you imagine gazing at a point off in the far horizon. Doing this for about 3 minutes should relax your eyes and prepare them for palming.

Most Effective Lazy Eye Exercises

January 5th, 2012

Lazy eye or “amblyopia” is the most common cause of vision trouble for persons under the age of forty.  This condition can be corrected with simple daily activities that can be done in a way that are lazy eye exercises as well.  Correcting the lazy eye is done by strengthening the muscles and the brain connection of those muscles through lazy eye exercises.  Don’t begin exercises without the advice and consent of your eye doctor to ensure these actions will benefit your specific condition.

Most commonly used treatment for lazy eye is an eye patch.  The eye patch is place over a person’s good eye and forced the lazy eye to work harder hence strengthening those muscles.  Just like lifting weights can strengthen your arm muscles.  The human eye has many muscles that need strengthening and conditioning in order to work well.  The visual challenge that the patch produces also forces the brain to work harder in conjunction with the muscles increasing the function of the brain to eye connection.  While wearing the eye patch performing a few exercises like rolling the weak eye, focusing on an object held in front of the eye and moving the object back and forth slowly forcing the lazy eye to focus on the object.

Eye Crunches to Reduce Eyestrain and Myopia

January 3rd, 2012

Eye doctors recommend that you do an eye crunch because when you’re actively using your eye muscles, you’re reducing your chances of myopia (nearsightedness) and eyestrain, which especially occurs among those who spend hours working in front of the computer or watching television. Dr. William Bates, an ophthalmologist, developed the earliest eye exercises in 1900 and he authored the book Perfect Sight Without Glass in 1920. Other benefits of doing an eye crunch include blood circulation to the eyes, reduction of eye tension and a reduction in the risk of age-related macular degeneration.  Finally, the eye crunch repairs a lazy eye, which occurs when some of your eye muscles weaken.

One eye crunch to try is to read from an eye chart that you can purchase from a medical supplies store. Paste the eye chart on a wall that’s a few inches away from you then glance up at it every few minutes. Another idea is to put your hand over one of your eyes then try to read some of the letters on the chart.  Do the same eye crunch with your other eye and repeat this for a few weeks.

Hand-Eye Coordination Exercises

December 30th, 2011

Hand-Eye Coordination ExercisesHand-eye coordination is the ability to use your eyes to guide your physical activity, and this is an essential skill for both children and adults. However, many people struggle with this skill so the best way to improve your hand-eye coordination skills is to do some hand-eye coordination exercises. You can find ideas for hand-eye coordination activities on the Internet, in children’s magazines, health magazines and in some physical therapy journals. Your physical therapist can also give you ideas on how you can improve your hand-eye coordination skills.

One good hand-eye exercise is video games.  When you play video games, you’ll need hand-eye coordination because you’re always looking out for your opponent’s strategies and where his next target is. You’re also trying to strategize your next moves based on what you see in the games. This is a fun activity you can do with family and friends. Jigsaw puzzles are also good hand-eye coordination exercises. Start with a puzzle that has less than ten pieces then work your way up to more challenging puzzles.  If you have little ones at home give them some LEGO building blocks and let them have fun with these because this teaches them good hand-eye coordination.

Eye Training Exercises

December 28th, 2011

Each eyeball contains six muscles that allow us to move our eyes and just like the muscles in our body, we need to exercise them.

Eye training exercises were created to help people improve sight, eye comfort, focus and coordination. Allowing your eyes to be in one position for a long period of time will cause them to become dry, sore and weak. If your eyes become dry, shut them as tightly as possible for 5 seconds, do this 5 times; this should help bring the moisture back to your eyes. You can also warm up your hands and cup them over your eyes or massage your temples. Massaging your temples will restore the blood flow to your eyes allowing in more oxygen.

If you focus on one thing for a long time frame, such as a computer or book, you may begin to strain your eyes and train them to primarily focus on a short distance. When you spend hours staring at something close to you, your eyes need to take a break. Use the eye training exercise of focusing on something that is at least ten feet away from you from at least ten minutes.

Try These Online Eye Exercises

December 24th, 2011

palming eye exercises There are many instances in our lives where we’ll focus our eyes too hard on something like our computers or television screens. When this happens, doing online eye exercises can relieve the strain that this type of focusing brings. There are a number of different eye exercises that you can do to improve the health of your eyes such as Palming. If you’re a stay at home mom who spends hours working from the computer, you certainly are aware of the strain on your eyes that follows.

This is where palming can be very beneficial. How this works is that for about 20-30 seconds you’d rub your hands together, creating heat in between them. Afterwards, place the palm of your hands over each eye. Make sure that your eyes are closed and that your palms don’t touch your eyelids. If possible, do this at a table so that you can rest your elbows on the table. The exercise is more effective when you are completely relaxed. After sitting this way for a few minutes, your eyes should feel much better.
